WHAT IS SNOWFLAKE OBSIDIAN? Snowflake obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as a result of rapid cooling of lava rich in silica. What makes snowflake obsidian intriguing is the presence of white or grayish spherulites or "snowflakes" scattered throughout its dark black or deep brown body. These unique snowflake patterns are formed due to the inclusion of small, needle-like crystals of the mineral cristobalite. The contrasting colors and delicate snowflake-like formations create a visually captivating stone. Snowflake obsidian is primarily composed of silicon dioxide and gets its black color from the presence of iron and magnesium impurities.
