WHAT IS RED GARNET? Garnets form when an aluminum rich sedimentary rock goes through intense heat and pressure. This occurs naturally in volcanic environments. In nature, garnets do not form as a pure specimen and in fact, the purest gem-quality garnet called pyrope ever discovered was composed of 83% pyrope, 15% almandine, and about 2% other garnets. Garnet is a group of stones including Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartite, Grossular, Andradite, and Uvarovite. Almandine Garnet is the most common gemstone in the garnet family, and comes in a range of colours, although the blend of almandine-pyrope creates the dark red variety that we mostly think of. Of interest, one of the rarest garnets, andradites have the highest dispersion, creating even more fire and sparkle than diamond. The rarest in the garnet family are uvarovites which are naturally a dark, rich green like an emerald.
WHY IT'S AWESOME? Garnet has been discovered in every color of our rainbow, except in the shades of blue. Gemstone experts believe that new types of garnet discovery are on the horizon still! In the last fifty years, new blends have been found in East Africa, and more blends might be out there. The tricky part is identifying garnets because of their tremendous range of overlapping colors, so color alone is not enough.
Legend has it that if you are to be separated from a lover, give the gift of garnet. This comes from the Greek myth of Persophone and Hades who gives her a pomegranite seed (symbolizing red garnet) to ensure a quick and safe return of his love. It is also thought to symbolize the mending of wounds between lovers.
