WHAT IS HOWLITE? Naturally occurring howlite is a borate mineral found in sedimentary rock, discovered by Henry How in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is generally white or grey and has spiderwebs of black, grey or deep brown running through it. Howlite can also be pure white and in a natural form can take on the form of cauliflower heads. Howlite is also called Kaolinite, Silico Boro Calcite, White Turquoise, Lapis Howlite, Sacred Buffalo, and White Buffalo.
WHY IT'S AWESOME? Imposter syndrome, or saving the coral reef? Howlite is beautiful in its natural form and should be appreciated in its natural state. However, howlite is a porous stone that easily absorbs dye and gem traders have tried to pass off as more expensive semi-precious gems. Turquoise and Coral are the ones to watch for, although the use of Howlite as a substitute for red corals brought happiness to environmental activists. The popular process has reduced the harvesting of red corals for commercial purposes.
