Rubellite is the semi-precious pink and red variety of tourmaline, formed under intense pressure and coloured by the trace element manganese. Its shades run from shocking pink to ruby red.
Tourmaline grows in many colours, from black, brown and yellow to blue, green, red and pink. Rubellites are quite rare, and fine stones can sometimes command more than rubies. Like quartz, rubellite is pyroelectric: it builds an electric charge when heated or cooled.
