Obsidian is a natural glass formed from volcanic activity. It is created when lava cools so rapidly that mineral crystals have no time to form, leaving a smooth, glassy texture. It is typically dark, often black, but can also appear in shades of brown, gray or green, and it is known for its sharp edges and reflective surfaces.
Each piece is tumbled into a smooth cube. The square shape symbolizes stability, structure and grounding energy, said to enhance manifestation and organization.

A stone of protection and grounding.
In crystal tradition, obsidian is a powerful protective stone, believed to shield against negativity by absorbing and dispelling harmful energies. It is said to assist in grounding and connecting with the Earth, promoting stability, strength and balance, and to enhance self-reflection and help uncover hidden truths, encouraging personal growth and transformation.
Obsidian is associated with the Root chakra, grounding energy, a sense of security and a strong foundation for personal and spiritual growth. Born from rapidly cooling volcanic lava, it is held to embody strength and protection; it is said to promote emotional rejuvenation, dispel fear and bring clarity and self-awareness, and its sharp edges symbolize cutting through illusions and revealing truth.
People have used obsidian for thousands of years, for tools, weapons and decorative objects and for cultural, spiritual and artistic purposes. It is found in volcanic regions worldwide, including the United States, Mexico, Armenia, Turkey, Iceland, Japan and Ethiopia.
Through the ages, crystals and stones have been collected and prized for their timeless beauty, their rich history and even their potential spiritual and metaphysical properties. We love the idea that crystals may have mystical properties, though nothing we sell comes with any sort of mystical guarantee.
