A polished globe of red garnet.

Three polished red garnet spheres on a sunlit table, wine-red garnet patches set in glossy black

Passion · Vitality · Manifestation

Wine-red garnet in glossy black.

Red garnet forms when aluminum-rich sedimentary rock undergoes intense heat and pressure in volcanic environments. It belongs to a diverse family that includes almandine, pyrope, spessartite, grossular, andradite and uvarovite. Almandine is the most common, and its dark red is the shade most of us picture; andradites are especially rare, with more sparkle than diamonds thanks to their high dispersion, and uvarovites, the rarest of all, glow a deep emerald green.

Every sphere carries its own pattern. Three are shown here side by side; you receive one.

Why it’s remarkable

A stone of every color but blue.

Garnet exists in almost every color of the rainbow except blue, and experts expect more discoveries to come: over the past fifty years new blends have emerged in East Africa. Its colors overlap so widely that color alone is not enough to identify a garnet.

The discovery of Bohemian garnet deposits in central Europe around 1500 set off a jewelry boom that lasted nearly 300 years. Typical garnets measure half an inch to an inch across, but almandines from Gore Mountain, New York, reach 23.6 in (60 cm) in diameter, and rare spessartites from Brazil weigh several pounds with beautiful transparency and rich color.

A stone of passion, vitality and manifestation.

In crystal tradition, spheres send energy out equally in every direction, and their symmetrical shape is thought to emit a high frequency of positive energy.

Red garnet is associated with love and friendship. It is said to bring courage, creative energy, vitality, abundance, flow, change and awareness, as well as emotional balance, and to dissolve ingrained patterns and outworn ideas, bypassing resistance and unconscious self-sabotage. In crystal energy work it is connected with the Root, Sacral and Heart chakras, and is said to purify and energize all of them, kindling inner fire, passion, energy, creativity and love.

In Hinduism and Buddhism red garnets are believed to bring good luck; in Tibet they are believed to increase longevity, and in China to protect against evil spirits. Known as the Traveler’s Stone, garnet was believed to have guided and protected Noah as he navigated the Ark. In Greek mythology, Hades gave Persephone a pomegranate seed, a symbol of red garnet, to ensure her return, and garnet came to signify the healing of lovers’ wounds.

Crystals have been prized for centuries for their beauty, their rich history and their believed metaphysical properties; Spirit Magicka makes no guarantee of any mystical or healing effect.
