Smoky quartz is silicon dioxide shaded by natural radiation acting on traces of aluminum over millions of years; the longer it forms, the darker it grows. Its browns range from light tan to nearly black, with varying transparency, so translucency and smoky depth differ in every generator.
Often confused with topaz, it is a durable gemstone, resistant to breakage and known for its substantial size, which makes it a favorite of jewelry makers.

Its other name, morion, comes from the Latin mormorion, a dark precious stone.
