A name born by chance
Named after a happy accident.
Aventurine was discovered in the 18th century and takes its name from the Italian ventura, "by chance". The story goes that a jewelry maker accidentally dropped metal filings into a vat of melting glass; when it cooled, the glass held beautiful iridescent sparkles and was made into jewelry. The stone was later named aventurine because it looked just like that accidental sparkling glass.
Until the 1800s it was also called the stone of the Amazonians, the fierce, independent women warriors of ancient Greek myth, who set it into their breastplates as adornment and as a talisman.
