Getting started

Cleanse, calibrate, then ask.

Cleanse

Before first use, hold your pendulum under cold running water for about thirty seconds, rest it in sunlight or moonlight, or pass it through sage or palo santo smoke. Many people repeat this regularly to keep it clear.
Pick a hand

Your dominant hand gives you more control; your other hand is said to keep you more open to the pendulum’s energy. Try both and keep what feels natural.
Calibrate

Sit quietly, pin the bead between your fingers and let the pendulum hang freely. Ask a question you know is yes, such as your own name, and watch how it moves. Then ask one you know is no.
Learn its language

It may circle, swing back and forth or move on a diagonal. Ask “show me yes” and “show me no” whenever you like; a smooth, steady motion is said to show the pendulum is a match for you.
